Arroyo Burro Beach – A Treat For Dogs
Clients often ask us about the various beaches that make our town so sweet. Today, we are talking about Arroyo Burro Beach, also known by locals as Hendry’s and surfers as “The Pit.”
In this post, Joe Parker of the Santa Barbara group offers a video of Arroyo Burro Beach and info about this local favorite. After the video, we provide additional info and pictures.
Arroyo Burro Beach – A Video Overview
Where is Arroyo Burro Beach?
As you travel south on Las Positas Road, you’ll come to a roundabout. Take the first right towards Hope Ranch and you’ll quickly see Arroyo Burro Beach on your left. Pull into the parking lot, and you are there. BTW: If there is no parking in the main lot, try the one to the east.
Why Do They Also Call Arroyo Burro Hendry’s Beach?
To answer this question, we have to go back to the late 1800s and early 1900s. At that time, a Scottish immigrant named William Hendry bought and farmed in the area now called Arroyo Burro Beach.
According to UCSB historian Michael Redmon, Hendry had a dozen kids who, along with friends, loved to swim in the area and naturally called the place Hendry’s Beach.
Mr. Hendry sold the property in 1918. Eventually, the County bought the land and called it Arroyo Burro County Park. FYI: Arroyo Burro is the name of the stream that feeds into the ocean at the park.
What Makes Arroyo Burro Beach So Special For Dogs & People?
I think we call all agree that a dog off-leash is a happy dog. A dog off-leash on the beach is a massively delighted pup. That is what Arroyo Beach offers its visitors.
As you go down a short set upstairs and start feeling the sand on your feet, you have two options. If you go right, you can walk down a long beach (depending on tides) past Hope Ranch. If you go left, you’ll find the area that is leash optional and filled with happy dogs.
Is There A Restaurant At Arroyo Burro Beach?
Locals and visitors alike love to go to The Boathouse Restaurant at Arroyo Burro Beach Park. Open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, The Boathouse is known for great food, good drinks and a stellar view of the beach.
The heated patio with protective glass walls is one of Santa Barbara’s best places to enjoy a meal or happy hour. There is often a wait for dinner, so be prepared to have to look out to the ocean and maybe watch a pod of dolphins or a group of surfers as you wait for your table.
We hope this post and video add to your knowledge about the town we call home and love. If you have real estate needs, have questions about Santa Barbara, know we are here for you.
